The SAGE Project's innovative Wellness services
feature an integrative approach that incorporates both allopathic
or "western medicine" with holistic, natural, and
alternative health and wellness disciplines.
Clients of SAGE's Wellness Program may receive Western medical
diagnostics and referrals, along with information and education
about nutrition, exercise, and detoxification. Along with
information about specific health conditions, the SAGE Wellness
Program may provide information and referrals or access to
healing modalities such as therapeutic massage, acupuncture,
Chinese herbal medicine, Western herbal medicine, nutritional
supplements, somatic experiencing, and energetic healing.
Though SAGE's Wellness Program, we emphasize empowerment and
reconstruction of damaged or shattered instincts and coping
skills, as well as the healing of the physical and energetic
bodies. SAGE clients have experienced extremes of powerlessness,
humiliation, and marginalization, so it's important to us
to extend our compassionate, grounded, non-judgmental support
for development and re-discovery of boundaries, self-respect
and skills-building, and access to information and education.
We believe these are crucial to the experience of deep healing
for our clients.
SAGE clients are eligible to receive complimentary herbal
medicine and full-body acupuncture treatments by appointment.
The SAGE Wellness Program also includes group acupuncture
clinics Monday-Friday (times vary). The acupuncture groups
are free and open to the community, and provide an entry point
for many clients to begin treatment. SAGE acupuncture groups
use the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association protocol,
which has been recognized by the U.S. National Institutes
of Health (NIH) as a useful treatment for treating addictions.
Massage and other forms of body work are also available free-of-charge
to SAGE clients, based on availability. We provide a range
of educational pamphlets and outreach materials on trauma,
stress, Hepatitis C, HIV, acupuncture, and community resources.
We offer medical testing on site, performed by staff or through
our San Francisco community health partner organization, the
Tom Waddell Clinic. Medical referrals and information are
also provided by case managers in the STAR Center, SSTC Program,
Youth Component, Mental Health, Men’s Program, Transgender
Services, EIPP, and STOP.
Community members who are not SAGE clients may become paying
clients within the Wellness Program in order to access full-body
acupuncture and herbal medicine treatments. Funds from our
paying clients support the cost of supplies and herbs for
the SAGE clients. Becoming a paying client is a way to support
the SAGE Wellness Program. We provide full-body acupuncture
and consultation about herbs on a sliding scale per-session
fee.
