The SAGE Volunteer Legal Advocacy Project (VLAP) is staffed by Bay Area Law Students, and provides free education, advocacy, and legal support for SAGE clients. The VLAP also provides legal-student intern support to the SAGE Trafficking Opposition Project (STOP).

Individuals in the sex industries are the targets of violence, discrimination, and harassment from sex offenders, pimps, traffickers, and too often from police and prison staff as well.

In most areas of criminal justice, survivors of sexual exploitation and individuals in prostitution are treated as criminals. This institutional response makes it difficult to advocate for and defend even the most basic legal and human rights of survivors of violence and coercion in the sex industries.

The SAGE Volunteer Legal Advocacy Project provides information and support to the other SAGE program areas, and also has several special programs:

  • Street Law: The “Street Law” workshops, also known as the “Fight for Your Rights Legal Clinic review crucial information that individuals in the sex industries need to know about navigating the criminal justice system, arrest, reporting experiences of sexual or physical assault, and obtaining legal representation and support.

  • Court Accompaniment: VLAP volunteers accompany youth clients to court dates in order to provide knowledgeable support to clients, and to be a watchdog of the court process.

  • Suitcase Clinics: VLAP volunteers work with legal service providers to offer on-site legal consultations in the areas of immigration, family, housing, and public benefits.
