The SAGE Project's Men’s Program works
with men who are in the sex industries and male survivors
of commercial sexual exploitation (CSE), trafficking, and
violence. The Men’s Program is a part of the First Offender
Prostitution Prevention Program (FOPP), but is a different
program from the “Johns’ School," which is
SAGE's restorative justice program for men arrested for soliciting
prostitution.
Because there are very few other resources for male survivors
of violence generally, and almost nothing for men who are
currently in or survivors of commercial sexual exploitation,
the SAGE Men’s Program addresses an urgent need in San
Francisco City and County.
Many of SAGE's male clients don’t seek support because
there is often shame attached to being male and in prostitution
or any of the sex industries. We operate based on the recognition
that there are an increasing number of men who are survivors
of sexual abuse, violence in prostitution, and rape. In SAGE's
recent history, we have worked with 20-30 clients per week.
The SAGE Men's Program offers clients access to health and
wellness services, including SAGE's alternative medical services,
support groups, one on one peer counseling, and vocational
rehabilitation. Men’s Program clients are also eligible
to receive psychotherapy through SAGE’s Mental Health
Program.
As with all of SAGE's survivor-sensitive services, we emphasize
that their experiences, survival, and well-being are important
to us. SAGE staff and peer-counselors offer support and resources
to help clients plan and work towards improved physical, economic,
mental, and social well-being and safety.
