SAGE Founder Norma Hotaling turned her own experience
with homelessness, addiction and prostitution into a mission
of social entrepreneurialism. She was determined to make it
easier for other women, men and youth who wanted to leave
the sex trade and addiction behind, and find their way from
the harsh effects of sexual exploitation to restored wellness,
confidence, vocation, and overall wholeness.
In addition to a degree in Health Education from San Francisco
State University, Ms. Hotaling has over 25 years of professional
experience in public-health research, education and outreach,
including in-depth expertise in systems of prostitution, domestic
and international trafficking in women and girls, HIV/AIDS
research and prevention, and the long-term physical and psychological
effects of physical and sexual violence on abused women.
Since co-founding the "John's School" (FOPP) and
founding The SAGE Project, Inc., Ms. Hotaling has also developed
expertise in criminal justice treatment programs, restorative
justice programs, and accomplishing these through collaborative
relationships between governmental and nonprofit agencies.
Ms. Hotaling continues her tireless crusade to raise awareness
and help bring about an end to commercial sexual exploitation,
not just by leading The SAGE Project, Inc.'s growing staff,
but also through public speaking, and providing expert counsel
to public policy makers and advocates who want to replicate
SAGE's programs within their own agencies and municipalities.
Her journey is an inspiration not just to those who are looking
to find their way out of a life of sexual exploitation, but
to all who want to make their own contributions to a more
just, compassionate, and humane world.
